What does Sketchstack actually produce from a photo?

Four artifacts per sketch: a rendered Mermaid diagram, an editable component graph, a Terraform skeleton for the inferred cloud target, and an Architecture Decision Record draft. All four are always shown together so you can compare them.

What kinds of sketches work?

Whiteboard photos with legible marker, tablet drawings (iPad, reMarkable), and clean paper sketches. Photos taken at a straight angle in decent light give the best results. Extreme skew or heavy glare hurts extraction quality.

Which cloud targets are supported?

AWS is live today. GCP and Azure Terraform generation are in development and listed as "Coming soon" on the integrations page — we won't ship them until the output is as coherent as the AWS version.

Do I need to use Mermaid?

No. Mermaid is one of the four outputs, but you can ignore it and use only the component graph, Terraform, or ADR. Every artifact is exportable independently.

Accuracy & limits

How accurate is the extraction?

On clean sketches with labeled boxes and non-crossing arrows, the component list is usually right on the first pass. Crossed lines, tiny handwriting, and ambiguous abbreviations reduce accuracy. We flag low-confidence components with a "best guess" marker.

What if the extraction is wrong?

You can review and edit every component before export — rename it, change its type, change its provider hint, add or remove edges. Nothing is exported until you approve it. The Terraform and ADR regenerate from your corrected graph.

Can it handle very complex diagrams?

Up to roughly 25 components per sketch works well. Beyond that, extraction quality drops and the resulting diagram is hard to read anyway. Break large systems into multiple sketches by subsystem.

Does it invent components that aren't on the whiteboard?

No. If a component doesn't appear in the sketch, it doesn't appear in the output. The Terraform skeleton only wires up resources we actually detected.

Data & privacy

What happens to my uploaded photos?

Photos are processed to extract the diagram, then stored in your workspace so you can regenerate the artifacts later. You can delete a sketch (and its derived artifacts) from the workspace at any time.

Do you train models on my sketches?

No. Your sketches are never used to train models. We use them only to generate your artifacts and to let you regenerate them on demand.

Where is data stored?

Data is stored in EU-hosted infrastructure. A detailed subprocessor list will be published alongside the paid tiers going live.

Can I delete my workspace?

Yes. Workspace deletion removes all sketches, generated artifacts, and account data within 30 days. Contact us from the workspace email to trigger it.

Billing

What counts as a generation?

One generation = one photo turned into the four artifacts. Regenerating the same sketch after tweaking assumptions counts as a new generation.

What happens when I hit my monthly quota?

You keep full read access to every spec you've already generated. New generations pause until the next reset, or you can upgrade in one click.

Do you offer refunds?

The 14-day free trial exists so you can validate the product before paying. After that, we refund the current period on request if something's broken on our side.

Does the free tier expire?

No. Free stays free — 5 generations every month, no card on file.
